A collection of Basterds

If you don't have Grindhouse Basterds by Wick-it the Instigator, well... you should change that now. Firstly it's free, secondly it's quality, funky and will deliver a laugh or two and thirdly it's a Quentin Tarantino inspired collection of remixes and seriously good shit.

So kicking back off with some Pretty Lights. This is Still Night from the Glowing in the Darkest Night album. As the the question goes, what makes the mutha fucker so damn fresh?

Pressing pause

Unfortunately my home PC has died a foul death. New one is on order and should be here in a week. Tune posting will resume as soon as I am not having to use my sodding phone to write this :P

We can't be divided

Seemed an appropriate title with so much of what's going on in the world lately. Anyways, music...

Now this man has some funky soul goodness going on, Willie Wright. He released a couple (that I know about anyway) of albums in the '70s and is probably best known for his cover of Curtis Mayfield's Right On For the Darkness.

Right On For the Darkness

I'm So Happy Now

Turns out though that Willie has recorded another album, his first for 34 years, just recently. For more info and to have a listen, check out his website on myspace.

Tune of the week

Tune I've been listening to the most this week is this Jimi Needle's edit of Tightrope by Janelle Monae. I like both, but actually I much prefer this to the original.

Tightrope (Jimi Needles Grand Popo Edit)

In case you somehow missed the original...

A selection

A mixture of audio pleasure for you good people today.

First off we have OOAH & Kitty-D with a mix of their musical adventures in 2007. Scientific sound surgery they've described it as... A fitting term. They've made it available as a free download too.

The Seedling Escape Mix (2007)

Next up we have Daisuke Tanabe and a tune I've posted before. It was in my head and not enough people have heard this before, so I'm posting again. I'm not entirely sure what genre he fits in, alternative-techno-breakbeat-thing, but I know it works.

Artificial Sweetener

Finally a funk classic by legendary British funk band, Cymande. If you've not heard Cymande before you will almost certainly have heard them sampled. If you don't own any... well, you should consider changing that. ;) From 1972 this is Brothers On The Slide.

Higher Ground

Just a quick fly by post today, more fleshed out stuff in the pipeline though ;) However, that doesn't mean today's tune can't be a good one...

Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground (scratchandsniff' re-rub)

En Route

You may recall I've posted about Caroline Lacaze before. This was back when I first heard L'etrange and it proceeded to melt my brain with dirty funk beats and Caroline's sublime vocals.

L'etrange

The album "En Route" has been out for a few months now and I've gotta say, daaaaaaaaaamn. This is some seriously fine funky and soulful work. Whilst all within the funk/soul remit, the tracks are quite varied yet maintaining what for me is quite a summery sound. Perfect for sitting outside in the sunshine at some city cafe watching the world go by. That said, with tunes like En Route Madam and Harley Davidson this is also very much tail-feather shaking dancing music ;) I know a few of my mates who will be working tunes from this album into their sets.

It's out on vinyl from Mocambo Records or Legere Recordings for CD & downloads. I'm not on a commission btw :P It's just good and highly recommended.

Oh and Roadstop makes me laugh every time :D

RIP Ray Manzarek

Ray Manzarek keyboard player for the Doors has died :( Like so many people The Doors were a huge influence on me when I was young and finding my way with music, women, the world and everything.

Whilst it's Jim Morrison's image that defines our mental picture of The Doors, it's Ray Manzarek's music providing the soundtrack.

Jazz legend

Joe Williams first blessed the world with his jazzy vocal delights in about 1939 singing in Chicago. From there his it was all up, with a steady climb to the very top of the jazz scene and a career that lasted all the way to his death in 1999. Recognised as one of the all time great jazz singers, Joe Williams achieved it all, from a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, to pretty much owning the Monterey Jazz Festival for like foreeeeeeeeever, singing with every jazz icon worth mentioning, performing in Carnegie Hall, to appearing as Grandpa Al in the Cosby Show.

This here is Joe Williams and the Jazz Orchestra in 1968 doing a cover of my all time favourite tunes, Get Out Of My Life woman by Lee Dorsey.

A selection of the finest Hip Hop...

...from my younger days... Maybe it's rose tinted glasses, but I'd say this lot comes from the golden years for the whole scene. I could post so many tunes here, Public Enemy, KRS One and so on immediately spring to mind, but this post was looking huge as I started thinking of tracks, so you're getting a slightly random selection.

Big Daddy Kane, you just can't go wrong. This track is from It's a Big Daddy Thing, an album you should purchase immediately. I remember skating with this in my Walkman for like forever, ahh memories ;)

Calling Mr. Welfare

Gang Starr... How to state just how important these guys were? Lyrically stunning and intelligent, delivered by the Guru's voice with it's rich tone and Premier's selection of jazzy beats remains, for me, the ultimate... One of the most poignant tracks from Step In The Arena, another essential album to own, this is Just To Get A Rep.

Just To Get A Rep

Young MC, regularly appearing in mixes all over the world right now... Timeless and funky as fuck. From the Stone Cold Rhymin' album this is....

Bust A Move

British hiphop doesn't tend to have the recognition of the horde of music the US produces, but there was (and still is) quality to be found. Caveman were probably the most acclaimed back in the day and had success both sides of the pond. This is taken from Positive Reaction.

I'm Ready

And finally another track from the UK, the title track from Overlord X's debut album.

Weapon Is My Lyric

Perfect

The Allergies and the mighty DJ Moneyshot are regularly coming in my ears. Smut intended, obviously. And this latest track... oh yeah, funky beats of BOOOOOM!

Classic drum break, sublime choice of samples, horns and more, all blended to be just.... Perfect eargasmic love funk.

You Wouldn't Know

iO Sounds

London producer iO Sounds (aka Rob Burn) brings us some mellow house with remixes from Forget Me Not, Mak & Pasteman, Ado and Lakosa. The EP is released on vinyl 13-JUN-2013 (digital on the 27th) on Diamond & Raw records.

Check out the EP here:

I like my tea in many flavours and this ticks the floaty musical bubbles box... so yeah works for me ;) Personal fave track would be this one:

Dirty Little Secret

Also it's well worth having a butchers at the Diamond & Raw website, for more info, loads more music to listen to and a few free downloads too.

Less funk, more beef

OK something a wee bit different today. A couple of my mates are in a band by the name of Sada. The tunes they put out are of the stoner-metal variety and fine quality too. They got signed recently and their debut album (ALL HAIL THE BEEFLORDS) is released 1st June this year. So if you like your music with extra beef, try the lads out.

These are old vids from before getting signed.

Bonetree

Also it must be said that their cover of Cliff Richard's Devil Woman is inspired.

Devil Woman

You can also listen to more tracks and also preorder the album (CD or download, plus you get 3 downloads straight away) from the following link: http://stargunmusic.bandcamp.com/releases

Get Lucky with WBBL

Plenty of remixes appearing of Daft Punk's new tune, but so far this bit of class from WBBL has been The One, Connor Mcleod style, if you know what I mean...

Richie Havens

Richie Havens, Woodstock legend, civil rights activist and a great voice. RIP sir.

Here's the man singing with Groove Armada on Jools Holland:

Hands Of Time

And of course, here's the one everyone will have been posting...

Freedom, live at Woodstock

So when I posted about...

my favourite Beatles song, I did say that We Can Work it Out is probably the one... The thing is, I just can't make my mind up between a bunch of them and never have been able to. Which with the bazillion songs they recorded is probably fair enough. So I thought I'd post one of the others that is a serious contender, the slightly more dirty, grinding, Hey Bulldog.

Ray

Was having a bit of a tune sharing session with mates on facebook a few nights ago. There was much goodness going on, but the highlight for me was being introducing me this amazing tune from Ray Charles.

Let's Go Get Stoned

There's so much I could post for Ray Charles, the guy is just a legend (he says stating the obvious...), but for now I'll just post these....

Ray Charles with BB King - Sinners Prayer

Kub vs. Ray Charles - Hit The Road Jack (Drum & Bass Remix)

Hooked on you

Heard this on a mate's radio show the other night. Proper gorgeous tune this is. It's remix by Kon of a Cerrone track (Hooked On You) from 1981. The remix bubbles along beautifully with disco funkiness and smiles are assured. :)

Ann Sexton

Ann Sexton recorded her stuff in the 1970s, never made it huge mainstream but she did alright :) Most of her tunes I've listened to are a bit ballady (new word yah) for me, but these two are proper funky.

Sorry folks, I been slack. Busy week was busy! For now here's a quick post of something a bit different than my normal kinda stuff, but I just heard this remix earlier and I was thinking about Donnie Darko only the other day.

Gary Jules - Mad World (Temporal Remix)

Tune of the week and a bonus

I'm highlighting a second Romano Gemini mashup this week. This one is a massive beast of funky beat rolling seriousness. I love Bobby C and Tina Turner is the boss lady, so to be fair, it was always on to a winner. ;) I shall also award this my tune of the week.

Ready Steady Can´t Stand The Rain - Tina Turner vs. Bobby C Sound TV vs. Rayko (R. Gemini Mashup)

And for a bonus, here's a second mashup, this one from the mighty Jimi Needles.

Dre vs Fugees - Episode or Not (Jimi Needles Rewind)

New track from Bodhi...

...and it's proper class. I must own this.

Funk from France

Loving this track from Caroline Lacaze. Quality vocals, dirty guitar riff and big-in-your-face funky drums. Single was out on vinyl December 2012, full album due for release early this year. One to watch this.

The Marion Gaines Singers

I know next to nothing about The Marion Gaines Singers, so sorry no info to share, just tunes. Been listening to them a bit last couple of days. Mixture of plain funky and gospel type stuff. Unfortunately the youtube vids are fairly poor quality, so I've only linked a couple. Though we can be thankful for Scratch and Sniff throwing down this gorgeous edit of:

Do Your Thing

If that tickles your bits then try these out too..

Today how about a mix from the mighty Mr Sam Redmore? Yes, yes I think so.

Best film soundtrack ever

Somebody needs to do something of a ghettofunk-electro-blues-gospel type arrangement with this gorgeous bit of music. Skeewiff I am looking at you ;)

Somebody's Callin' My Name

It's from the film Crossroads (not the Britney shite), a movie that everyone into music should purchase for it's gorgeous soundtrack, predominantly written by Ry Cooder. By far my favourite film soundtrack of all time, which I know is a rather bold statement. It's a good film too and yes it does have the karate kid in it :P

Here's a couple more examples from it :)

Viola Lee Blues

Willie Brown Blues

Joe Seneca was a legend. Damn... so good :)

F

A mate posted this tune up earlier which got me thinking about it :) The Meters are one of the most influential funk bands of all time, you can hear their FUNK echoing through... well, like everyone ;) And I have no idea how many samples they've provided, more than lots.

Immense tune from 1973 and an all time classic, this is The Meters with:

Godly

Skeewiff, love 'em I do, fookin love 'em. Here they're working some magic on an old gospel number.

Skeewiff & The Soul Stirrers - I Want To Rest

I've been listening to a fair bit of this style of gospel remixing goodness lately, checking out the originals where possible. For this one I'm having trouble finding the original anywhere online other than this which is pretty poor quality unfortunately.

Friday, 4 January 2013

Technically I posted this yesterday...

...so sue me.

There are many tunes I could select for the stand out track on the Ghetto Funk Icons volume 3 sexiness, but personally I think this is probably the one. It grabs a tune we all know intimately and then takes it somewhere totally different, it's inventive yet somehow remains true to the originals vibe. Absolutely love the way it starts rolling and then as Easy kicks in properly the combination of vocals is sublime.
