Animal

I like animals. I like music. I like animals and music.

C@ in the H@ does good stuff with swing. Here we have an electro swing dubstep swingstep thing:

Swing Sound of '88

Next up are Count Yates and Marsha Gee, who unfortunately I know bugger all about but stumbled upon recently and made me think of doing this animal themed post. :P Plus the tunes made me chuckle and someone needs to go play with them...

Chimpanzee

Peanut Duck

Obvious one to put in now... Yup it's The Beatles.

I Am The Walrus

And finally, because in reality we're just animals with guns and money, here's one of my all time favourite tracks; the Smoove remix of Steve Winwood's immense...

I'm a Man

Ah bugger it, one for the road... There's only one Animal!

The Doctor

I listen to Doctor Hooka mixes a lot. A monumental amount. More than is probably healthy. In other words, A whole sodding LOT. In fact today my entire working soundtrack was a selection of his mixes... I'm a huge fan of his track selection, the leaping across genres and the defining themes that truly work without sticking to the obvious. "Is good init" as they say round here. Here's a few examples of why I'm gushing so...

Bit of a Halloween thing going on with this one.

Spaceport (Re-Edit)

I got a real thing for the electroswing scene, it's happy music. The world needs more happy. This delivers it.

Hookz & Swings

During the recent series of Doctor Who, our musical Doctor did a mix inspired by each episode. They're all worth grabbing, really great selection of tunes, but this one in particular tickles my fancy.

A Town Called Mercy

Also the Doctor providers other musical services with radio shows on:
Every 2nd/4th Thursday 3pm GMT www.nsbradio.co.uk
Every Monday 10pm GMT www.piraterevival.co.uk
Every Sunday 11pm GMT www.statichq.com

And there's this simple but effective classy thing....

Massive Attack/Everything But The Girl-Better Things (Hook-Cave Extension)

And a brief bit of extra Tardis action, Eminem style.

I could not agree more

In Logam's words:

"Is it just me or is the standard for what is considered to be "Dubstep" today just getting lower and lower and lower and lower on a daily basis? I mean seriously, I just heard some of the worst "Dubstep" I've ever heard and this dude or dudes have over 2000 followers. For my next Dub release I'm just going to set off a car alarm, record it, and put a beat behind it...oh and sample someone talking about hoes or drugs or hoes with drugs and then pitch it down and insert it right before the drop. 10,000 followers in one day. Guaranteed."

Tune of the week

There have been a great many Return of the Mac remixes over the years, but today I have a new favourite... Jimi Needles goes for a classic soul vibe and totally nails it. Most definitely my favourite tune of the last week too.

Free download from his facebook page as well, so go give the man a like via the button below.

Jimi Needles - Return of the Mac (Short Edit)

ps: I will attempt to remember to do a tune of the week, every week...

JFB

Huge as...

Wick-it the Instigator, oh hello! What have you done here?? HUUUUUUUUUGE TUNE!

Three 6 Mafia vs. Metallica - Lightning Head (Wick-it Remix)

And for some reason the beat on that just makes me want to see Tom Cruise do his Tropic Thunder dance to it...

Disco Syndicate takes a lesser known but quality Lenny Kravitz tune and does special things to it. Possibly in a sexual way. At least it feels like it to me.

Dramophone

Caravan Palace with a quality electroswing number from their new album Panic (on itunes here) and a video that should raise a smile or two :)

Magic in Glasgow

Gonna be a big post today, dedicated to some musical technician wizard type folks from Glasgow. :)

I got a lot time for Scratchandsniff and the Applescruffs with the awesome they're putting up on soundcloud. Their tune selection demonstrates excellent music taste, which is a good thing of course, but then they enhance those tunes with a skillful, subtle touch that shows real care and respect to the original. Or possibly they actually do some harry-potter-gandalf shit, cos the end result is always magic.

Here's a few amazingly good examples:

George Jackson - You Can't Make It No Better

General Johnson - Don't Walk Away

Charles Bradley - No Time For Dreaming

Chuck Carbo - Can I Be Your Squeeze

And this... damn!
Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band - Stay Away

A piper is down...

Bobby C Sound TV, who I shall now refer to as Bobby, was walking round London recently when he stumbled upon a chap playing Bagpipes in the street. So Bobby being Bobby, he immediately recorded the bloke and then turned it into one his trademark big sound bouncing tunes :) Inspiration that, proper.

Piper on the Bridge

And just in case you aint seen this before... Here's another classic Bobby C Sound TV remix:

Boots and Cats

Sammy Senior

Sammy Senior lays the gauntlet down with a tune funkier than a badger in a purple pimp suit. An essential purchase.

Comparisons

I was listening to the Check Your Head radio show the other night and Steam played Our Day Will Come by Ruby & The Romantics from 1963... I'd heard the Amy Winehouse version, but I must admit I hadn't heard the original before. OK actually I didn't know it existed :P Love it though! Check out the 2 versions and see which you prefer. Both are great of course, but for me the original has a bit more magic :)

Our Day Will Come (Amy Winehouse)

Our Day Will Come (Ruby & The Romantics)

The Check Your Head radio show can be found at Fnoob Underground on Thursday nights 8pm to 10pm GMT. It's well worth tuning in to for a diverse musical journey every week.

Oh yes :)

This is an awesome bit of electroswing from The Swing Bot. And a free download. Move quickly, you need this.

Glenn Miller - Hooked On Swing (The Swing Bot Remix)

Now you say you love me

Julie London had such an amazingly sultry tone to her voice, it always makes me think of smokey bars, hard drinks and super sexy folks in 1950s attire.

Her version of Cry Me a River is an absolute classic and personifies the era. Nigh on perfect this...

Cry Me A River

But that doesn't mean it can't be played with :) As High Contrast did a few years back, using it as the core of their huge D&B tune.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

I was just gonna post those 2 tunes today, but then I remembered this... Many folks covered The Door's Light My Fire, but I think this is my favourite, plus it has flute. Flute is good.

Light My Fire

Posted this before but....

...just felt like putting it out there again. Yes I know that's 3 times, but I really like it, so whatever :P

The XX, Angels (Bodhi remix)

And since I'm here and thinking about The XX remixes and the like. This cover is decent...

Gorillaz -- Crystalised (The XX Cover)

OK and last edit :P Ya'll will obviously know the XX tune Intro, but perhaps you've not seen how it fits so well with this video from NASA. And yes that is the northern lights seen from space. Proper trippy and more than a little mind blowing that... HD and full screen is recommended :)

Getting you set for the weekend

OK so the weekend starts today, which means it's time for some proper going out music. Three mixes, all quality and all very different, one of these should fit the night you've got planned. Plus you should like at least one of these, or like WTF? Seriously now ;)

Spread the word

The world has seen many Beatles remixes, maaaaaaaaaaaaaany beatles remixes oh yes, but few on a par with this little bit of perfection from Paul Nice. It's available as a free download for a limited amount of time, so be quick.

The Word (Paul's "SPREAD THE WORD" Remix)

A nice surprise

I got a message yesterday pointing me in the direction of this mix... And what a nice surprise that was! It's got a lovely and relaxing ambient vibe to it and a particularly interesting track list (nice imagery, if ya get me). I do like it when people do interesting stuff :) Free download too, so get to it folks.

JT reggae

Jamie Travers (AKA JT) really knows how to deliver a decent reggae style mashup and because he's clearly a decent chap, they're free downloads too! :) You should go check out his soundcloud for those downloads for sure, there's maaaaaaaaany tunes to have fun with. Here's a couple of my faves from his recently added tunes

Ben E King's classic "Stand By me"

Alex Care's "Too Close"

I could post loads of his stuff up, but this from a few months ago uses the same track as above but is also just abso-fucking-lutely spot on.

Mark Morrison... Return of the Mack

Prince

So at the Coachella festival in 2008 Prince did a live cover of Radiohead's Creep. As you'd expect from Prince it's an interesting rework and the guitar work is more than a bit good.

50 years of Bond video

Bond, James Bond. Now with video.

Monday music

A bit of a Monday mixture to get the week started. AND you can download all of these for free! :)

First off DJ Moneyshot's (you should be downloading his mixes btw) outfit The Allergies having some fun with Pete Rock & CL Smooth.

They Reminisce Over You (The Allergies Revisit)

Next we have Cyril Hahn's gorgeous remix of Solange's Losing You. Proper end of night anthem this. It's pretty much incomparable to the original and makes for a tune that's sooooooooo much more my cup of tea to be honest.

Losing You (Cyril Hahn Remix)

And last, but certainly not least, Elliot Ireland (of Skeewiff & Jalapeno records fame) with a beautiful chillout track. The piano when it kicks in is just... wow!

Odham's Walk

50 years of Bond

Like a good martini, A Skillz and Krafty Kuts mixes will get you shaking your thing good and proper. There's none of that stirring nonsense here... ;)

Here they've served up some quality cinemascopetastic Bond style awesomeness. Seriously, you gotta get this free download like now. And then play it over and over whilst sliding around the room in a tux with a pistol shaped bulge in your pocket.

Roy Ayers

Today here's a couple of Roy Ayers tracks. First is a well known classic you'll definitely know, but the second is not quite so well known. Which is a shame because it's got a proper groove to it :)

Love Will Bring Us Back Together

Funk In The Hole

You need this tune

I can be a little precious about people remixing Bob Marley, too often I find it's just feels kinda pointless. However, if it's done right it can be stunning. Like this absolutely gorgeous musical masterpiece from Sam Redmore.

Is This Love (Sam Redmore's Acoustic Takedown)

And you can download it for free on Sam's facebook

More 212 clever stuff

The MotherChip, who in their own words "deal in heavyweight funk and speaker-worrying wobble hop.", must have had a bit of chuckle with this one. Lovin it :)

Renegades of Jazz go latin...

...under the name Mankoora..

I do like me some Renegades of Jazz, I posted up a great Daytoner remix of theirs not so long ago, but today it's all about them being Mankoora and getting their latin funk with a breakbeat moustache face on. :)

The two devilishly funky tracks below are out now on a double 45 from Hiperbole records..

This is a great mix from Palov. I've linked his stuff before, I am a bit of  fan it must be said, but this is particularly classy. And a free download too :)

At home

Just a few XX tracks today, nice and mellow for a working from home day. I'm slightly torn with them, half of their stuff is great, but the other half I find a little too keen to be some kind of 80s-siouxsie-smiths-zero7 inspired hybrid thing which loses its way (ok... that makes sense in my head).

Swing wubs

Two very different tunes today :)

First off we have S Strong with a classy swing hop style remix.

Speakeasies swing band - Bright lights, late nights(S Strong Remix)

Next up we have C2C going for it with a electro-dubstep-wubwubwub-bluesness.

C2C - Down The Road (HIFANA Live Remix)
