Tune(s!) of the year

This was a tough one. 2012 has been a big year for me and there's been so much quality music accompaniment, that really I could have picked loads of different tunes. So actually I will... well kind of...

Timeless masterpiece that never left my ipod

Ya'll should know this...
Lynn Collins - Think

The tune I listened to most in 2012

Perfect.
Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes - Wake up Everybody (Psychemagik Edit)

Prettiest little thing of the year

Prior to 2012 The XX hadn't really been on my radar. I'd heard their stuff but for some reason I just hadn't bothered to look up who it was (despite liking it, so slack I know...). The Coexist album though got my attention and most of all this.
The xx - Angels

Video of the year

OK, I am totally cheating here. This isn't from 2012 and it isn't even an official video. Meh, whatever. It was 2012 when i got to see it and I think it's just such a clever idea. It's also beautiful. Plus the track is fucking amazing. Gotta love Aeroplane.
Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane Remix) ft. Au Revoir Simone

THE BIG WINNER!

2012's Funked Up Tune Of The Year

I'm big in to Featurecast's work, but this one in particular really did it for me. Featurecast does what he always does best with magical beats of magicalness and Greg Blackman lays down some sublime vocals. Funky soulful and just the proper good shit.
Featurecast (featuring Greg Blackman) - Get Lovely

Honourable mentions...

Doctor Hooka is a mixing machine of such immensely prolific proportions that I can barely keep up. Seriously bloke, I dunno how the fuck you do it. Thanks for tunes mate.

Here's almost 3 hours of electroswing he delivered recently.
Hookz & Swings

Chrispop brought us a ghettofunk classic that deserves a special mention :)

Digga Digga Doo

Also want to give a shout to Nolan Brown who introduced me to Daisuke Tanabe and sent me off on in new directions of musical discovery. ;)

Daisuke Tanabe - Artificial Sweetener

Season's Greetings

The Olympic Cyclone Band receive funkedup approval for two main reasons:

1) they be funky.

2) they're called the Olympic Cyclone Band

Check out this collection of snippets from their latest album. An absolute must for Xmas shenanigans. :D

Seriously folks, you should go get this. It'll totally sort out your xmas party playlist. THIS is how you do an xmas album.

Tune of the week and it's only Monday?!?!

Nick Pride & The Pimptones dare to cover the uncover-able and, well... they don't screw up :D Everyone with ears (ok, everyone who has ears and a brain not full of wank) loves Massive Attack's legendary Unfinished Sympathy and this cover lends it a beautiful summery vibe. Perfect for pretending it's not winter and putting a smile on the face  ;) This tune is a good and glorious thing, so go listen and then go buy it.

Unfinished Sympathy

Jazz from Japan

I know bugger all about Mari Nakamoto, had a bit of a search and she's been kicking around a while doing the jazz thing, so excuse my ignorance. This tune has an awesome bass line... Actually it's just all round class.

Parov Stelar

There is of course loads of Parov Stelar on youtube, soundcloud and so on. Much quality stuff to jump around to.. Spoiled for choice on what to post, but me it's all about the Booty Swing and in particular this video with proper dancing legends...

Not that I have a thing...

Yeah I've posted a few things featuring The XX before, so shoot me. It's been about for few years this tune, but I really like it and regularly find myself listening to it.

German Jazz

Sorry for the slow updates, been a hectic few days. Anyway, here's something a little different today, some jazz from Germany. [re:jazz] have a new album out by the name of Kaleidoscope. I've been listening to it this week for more relaxed chilled out evenings. There's lots to like, this is proper music. Plus it has some flute, which is always a bonus ;) Oh and it featues N'dea Davenport of Brand New Heavies fame, so that should give you an idea of where it's going. Various listening options below :)

I say old chap

Chap-hop still confuddles me. It's clearly ridiculous, yet I remain mildly amused and perhaps charmed by the whole idea. I imagine that's exactly the point :D

Plus it does have some serious beats lurking around. This recent tune from Mr B (The Gentleman Rhymer) is a class example. And damn there's some slick suits in the video.

Just Like A Chap

And then of course there's the rather well known Fighting Trousers from Professor Elemental. Regardless of if the rap style rocks your boat, the tune itself is proper good. Clever tinkering from the Professor as he slows down an old tune Twilight in Turkey by Raymond Scott from way back in the 1930s. Ah I love the things the internet can teach you :D.

Fighting Trousers

Twilight in Turkey

I could post a shit load of other tunes that make me chuckle, but I think this one has to be done. Mr B's tribute to the hip-hop classics

Chap Hop History

An essential Smoove purchase

Smoove knows how to do a remix; his rework of Steve Winwood's I'm a Man is an immense, guaranteed to get your arse moving, b-boy classic that I listen to all the time. So no surprise that I'd been looking forward to getting my hands on his latest album, the aptly named "First Class". Whilst some of the tracks have been knocking about for a while, the album was only officially released last month and has a whole load of other tunes on it. It's an awesome collection of quality remixes and I can't recommend it enough (please note I am not on a commission lol, it's just damn good).

Highly recommended :)

Tune of the week

I remember the first time I heard Rose Rouge from St Germain's Tourist album, it was the year 2000 and I was on the last day of a holiday in Amsterdam. I immediately decided I must own this, but being the last day it was a bit of a rush and I couldn't find the album anywhere... So off we went and headed to Schiphol Airport. I popped into a shop to buy a magazine, glanced at the CD rack as I walked in and WTF! There it was straight in front of me :) Result!

Here we have Leftside Wobble giving this classic tune a gentle edit. To quote their wise words.. "This ones all about the rhythm track overdubs and subtle filtering. Sometimes an edit needs a very light touch and with a track so perfect this is certainly the case here."

Jetlag

Normally I'm not a fan of Whitney Houston songs. I can appreciate them sure, she had a great voice and all, but they're just not my thing (for a wide range of reasons most of the 80s and I are still not talking). However this has now changed, all thanks to the tune that arrived in my email yesterday...

Over in Brussels, Jetlag are doing classy stuff with house and other electronic music (and violins I gather, which intrigues me greatly...). This tune is a remix of I'm Every Woman, ya'll know it obviously. It will be officially released on the 6th of November 2012, though Jetlag have made it available as a free download right now. It's proper good, so go listen.

Every Woman

And whilst we're talking about Jetlag, check out this mixtape. I've got it playing right now. Goodness.

Religion

Been lots of talk about religion today, people claiming with absolute certainty that they know the unknowable. So in reality just the usual manipulative crap. Which made me think of this track by Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip...

A letter from God to Man

And whilst I'm thinking about Mr Pip, here's one from his solo album Distraction Pieces.

Animal

I like animals. I like music. I like animals and music.

C@ in the H@ does good stuff with swing. Here we have an electro swing dubstep swingstep thing:

Swing Sound of '88

Next up are Count Yates and Marsha Gee, who unfortunately I know bugger all about but stumbled upon recently and made me think of doing this animal themed post. :P Plus the tunes made me chuckle and someone needs to go play with them...

Chimpanzee

Peanut Duck

Obvious one to put in now... Yup it's The Beatles.

I Am The Walrus

And finally, because in reality we're just animals with guns and money, here's one of my all time favourite tracks; the Smoove remix of Steve Winwood's immense...

I'm a Man

Ah bugger it, one for the road... There's only one Animal!

The Doctor

I listen to Doctor Hooka mixes a lot. A monumental amount. More than is probably healthy. In other words, A whole sodding LOT. In fact today my entire working soundtrack was a selection of his mixes... I'm a huge fan of his track selection, the leaping across genres and the defining themes that truly work without sticking to the obvious. "Is good init" as they say round here. Here's a few examples of why I'm gushing so...

Bit of a Halloween thing going on with this one.

Spaceport (Re-Edit)

I got a real thing for the electroswing scene, it's happy music. The world needs more happy. This delivers it.

Hookz & Swings

During the recent series of Doctor Who, our musical Doctor did a mix inspired by each episode. They're all worth grabbing, really great selection of tunes, but this one in particular tickles my fancy.

A Town Called Mercy

Also the Doctor providers other musical services with radio shows on:
Every 2nd/4th Thursday 3pm GMT www.nsbradio.co.uk
Every Monday 10pm GMT www.piraterevival.co.uk
Every Sunday 11pm GMT www.statichq.com

And there's this simple but effective classy thing....

Massive Attack/Everything But The Girl-Better Things (Hook-Cave Extension)

And a brief bit of extra Tardis action, Eminem style.

I could not agree more

In Logam's words:

"Is it just me or is the standard for what is considered to be "Dubstep" today just getting lower and lower and lower and lower on a daily basis? I mean seriously, I just heard some of the worst "Dubstep" I've ever heard and this dude or dudes have over 2000 followers. For my next Dub release I'm just going to set off a car alarm, record it, and put a beat behind it...oh and sample someone talking about hoes or drugs or hoes with drugs and then pitch it down and insert it right before the drop. 10,000 followers in one day. Guaranteed."

Tune of the week

There have been a great many Return of the Mac remixes over the years, but today I have a new favourite... Jimi Needles goes for a classic soul vibe and totally nails it. Most definitely my favourite tune of the last week too.

Free download from his facebook page as well, so go give the man a like via the button below.

Dramophone

Caravan Palace with a quality electroswing number from their new album Panic (on itunes here) and a video that should raise a smile or two :)

Magic in Glasgow

Gonna be a big post today, dedicated to some musical technician wizard type folks from Glasgow. :)

I got a lot time for Scratchandsniff and the Applescruffs with the awesome they're putting up on soundcloud. Their tune selection demonstrates excellent music taste, which is a good thing of course, but then they enhance those tunes with a skillful, subtle touch that shows real care and respect to the original. Or possibly they actually do some harry-potter-gandalf shit, cos the end result is always magic.

Here's a few amazingly good examples:

George Jackson - You Can't Make It No Better

General Johnson - Don't Walk Away

Charles Bradley - No Time For Dreaming

Chuck Carbo - Can I Be Your Squeeze

And this... damn!
Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band - Stay Away

A piper is down...

Bobby C Sound TV, who I shall now refer to as Bobby, was walking round London recently when he stumbled upon a chap playing Bagpipes in the street. So Bobby being Bobby, he immediately recorded the bloke and then turned it into one his trademark big sound bouncing tunes :) Inspiration that, proper.

Comparisons

I was listening to the Check Your Head radio show the other night and Steam played Our Day Will Come by Ruby & The Romantics from 1963... I'd heard the Amy Winehouse version, but I must admit I hadn't heard the original before. OK actually I didn't know it existed :P Love it though! Check out the 2 versions and see which you prefer. Both are great of course, but for me the original has a bit more magic :)

Our Day Will Come (Amy Winehouse)

Oh yes :)

This is an awesome bit of electroswing from The Swing Bot. And a free download. Move quickly, you need this.

Glenn Miller - Hooked On Swing (The Swing Bot Remix)

Now you say you love me

Julie London had such an amazingly sultry tone to her voice, it always makes me think of smokey bars, hard drinks and super sexy folks in 1950s attire.

Her version of Cry Me a River is an absolute classic and personifies the era. Nigh on perfect this...

Cry Me A River

But that doesn't mean it can't be played with :) As High Contrast did a few years back, using it as the core of their huge D&B tune.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

I was just gonna post those 2 tunes today, but then I remembered this... Many folks covered The Door's Light My Fire, but I think this is my favourite, plus it has flute. Flute is good.

Light My Fire

Posted this before but....

...just felt like putting it out there again. Yes I know that's 3 times, but I really like it, so whatever :P

The XX, Angels (Bodhi remix)

And since I'm here and thinking about The XX remixes and the like. This cover is decent...

Gorillaz -- Crystalised (The XX Cover)

OK and last edit :P Ya'll will obviously know the XX tune Intro, but perhaps you've not seen how it fits so well with this video from NASA. And yes that is the northern lights seen from space. Proper trippy and more than a little mind blowing that... HD and full screen is recommended :)

Spread the word

The world has seen many Beatles remixes, maaaaaaaaaaaaaany beatles remixes oh yes, but few on a par with this little bit of perfection from Paul Nice. It's available as a free download for a limited amount of time, so be quick.

The Word (Paul's "SPREAD THE WORD" Remix)

A nice surprise

I got a message yesterday pointing me in the direction of this mix... And what a nice surprise that was! It's got a lovely and relaxing ambient vibe to it and a particularly interesting track list (nice imagery, if ya get me). I do like it when people do interesting stuff :) Free download too, so get to it folks.

JT reggae

Jamie Travers (AKA JT) really knows how to deliver a decent reggae style mashup and because he's clearly a decent chap, they're free downloads too! :) You should go check out his soundcloud for those downloads for sure, there's maaaaaaaaany tunes to have fun with. Here's a couple of my faves from his recently added tunes

Ben E King's classic "Stand By me"

Alex Care's "Too Close"

I could post loads of his stuff up, but this from a few months ago uses the same track as above but is also just abso-fucking-lutely spot on.

Mark Morrison... Return of the Mack

Prince

So at the Coachella festival in 2008 Prince did a live cover of Radiohead's Creep. As you'd expect from Prince it's an interesting rework and the guitar work is more than a bit good.

50 years of Bond video

Bond, James Bond. Now with video.

Monday music

A bit of a Monday mixture to get the week started. AND you can download all of these for free! :)

First off DJ Moneyshot's (you should be downloading his mixes btw) outfit The Allergies having some fun with Pete Rock & CL Smooth.

They Reminisce Over You (The Allergies Revisit)

Next we have Cyril Hahn's gorgeous remix of Solange's Losing You. Proper end of night anthem this. It's pretty much incomparable to the original and makes for a tune that's sooooooooo much more my cup of tea to be honest.

Losing You (Cyril Hahn Remix)

And last, but certainly not least, Elliot Ireland (of Skeewiff & Jalapeno records fame) with a beautiful chillout track. The piano when it kicks in is just... wow!

I can be a little precious about people remixing Bob Marley, too often I find it's just feels kinda pointless. However, if it's done right it can be stunning. Like this absolutely gorgeous musical masterpiece from Sam Redmore.

At home

Just a few XX tracks today, nice and mellow for a working from home day. I'm slightly torn with them, half of their stuff is great, but the other half I find a little too keen to be some kind of 80s-siouxsie-smiths-zero7 inspired hybrid thing which loses its way (ok... that makes sense in my head).

Eclectic taste is the way to go

It's always good to not to be a genre locked when it comes to music. You know like those people that when asked what music they like reply with just one thing... It's like only eating food from one culture, which would be boring, shows a lack of imagination and generally makes for a dull person. Not that I'm saying don't have favourites, cos we all do, just make sure you try other stuff ;)

So here's a few different bits and bobs at random that I listened to today at one point or another.

Glitch

I'm kinda torn on this tune from Droideka. I'm not a huge fan of glitch stuff in general, but this is kinda winning me over. That guitar always would though to be fair. As a bit of a ghetto funk whore myself, I would say the song title is slightly misleading, unless I'm missing some irony or something. Which is possible.

Sunset

Apple Scruffs are always reinvigorating classic tunes, I could spend ages linking the quality stuff they've put back out there, but today I shall just settle for a bit of Michael Jackson.

Sunset Driver (The Apple Scruffs Edit)

Woah

This is amazing. Kendra Morris grabs a Metallica classic by the balls and takes it somewhere totally different. Proper class.

Wake Up Everybody

One of my favourite tunes this. I think I posted the gorgeous Pyschemagik remix before... Meh whatever, here it is again, followed by another version I heard last night. The later one is more true to the original and is equally lush, as my lady would say..

Some Northern Soul

For a mod friend of mine I'm linking up some classic Northern Soul :)

First off we have The Metros and...

Since I found my Baby

Next up a personal fave (HUUUUUUUUUGE tune this), Edwin Starr and...

Time

And finally, Tony Clarke's classic...

Landslide

Gangnam Style

OK so slightly different post purely because this video made me laugh the other week or whenever it was. So you probably saw this video already since it went properly viral and has been posted all over.

Amusing, catchy, etc... Anyways, I was curious as to what remixes were floating around and if anyone had made something interesting, so I had a bit of explore last night... To be blunt, most of them were proper shite or terribly generic and uninspired, but this one has potential (I presume it's not finished).

/random

Old to the old remixed

A little bounce now from the old to the old remixed..

L. V. Johnson with some classic soul R&B from (I believe) 1981.

I Don't Really Care

Such a beat on this track from 1974 by Chuck Jackson (song originally by Lamont Dozier, but I like Chuck's version a lot more).

Take Off Your Make-up

And now leaping elsewhere with a big face slapping beat... Featurecast, who's altar I worship at regularly, lays down a HUUUUUGE Public Enemy remix. Free download too. :)

Harder Than You Think (Featurecast Remix)

This should make you smile, Leftside Wobble delivers an Ian Dury remix :D And yet another free download.

A thousand apologies

I've had the pox and was too wasted to post up tunes and stuff. I've got a huge backlog of digging, radio shows and soundcloud loveliness to catch up on now... So whilst I get on that and to make amends, here's a few slices of goodness that have immediately stood out. Free downloads on the first few too...

Firstly here's a gorgeous edit of Right Direction's

Midnight Rhythm (A Digital Needle edit)

And then we have this... I like a bit of Goldfrapp. I like Sparky's style. As such I like this an almost sexual way..

Strict machine (sparky's extended re hash)

Ya'll know I love me a bit of Skeewiff, they simply always deliver.

Hey DJ

Finally we have this mellow lushness from Daytoner, available soon on iTunes.

From the Root to the Fruit

And a bonus blues track from Daytoner that just rolls it out

Thou shalt not fuck with Candi Staton

I do like a bit of Florence and the Machine, always had a thing for that kind of vocal, but one thing I didn't really like was their cover of  You Got the Love. It broke the rule: Thou shalt not fuck with Candi Staton. Like most people with any taste, it's one of my all time favourite tracks and Florence's version was just a bit lifeless in comparison.

You Got the Love

However, a few days ago I stumbled across this remix of Florence's version by Fukuyama. And I like it... a lot. Makes for a much more interesting version, as it does something properly different with the tune  going on a  funky house disco trip. Nicely done chaps, nicely done indeed.

Continuing from yesterday's electro swing, check out Odjbox with the track:

Birmingham

Now if you like this, head over to his site and you can download a 5 track album (including Birmingham) for whatever cost you feel like paying, which can be zero if you want it free. Actually he has other albums you can get for free there too. So well worth a visit and maybe chuck the lad some cash if you appreciate the work.

Swing

I'm quite into the whole electro-swing thing right now. Lots of interesting stuff going on, with people reintroducing music from all over time and the world. This one is a remix by Mr Gramo of the Belgian group Vaya Con Dios' single "Don't Cry For Louie". The original could be from any time in like the last 70 years, it's got that old school swing thing going on, but it's actually from 1988.

Papa was too

One tune is not enough :D

Two classics

Lee Dorsey was a proper R&B singer, from the days when R&B actually did what it said on the tin. Apparently he was also in the US Navy and a kick arse boxer. A man of many skills then.

Give It Up

And then we have Dee Edwards, a great singer who released a chain of tracks during the 1960s, but made it big in the charts in the late 1970s when she got into disco. However the tune I'm linking is a more soulful ditty from the early 70s and is a personal fave.

Old to the New

Saturday, 2 June 2012

Old to the new, the new to old

Menahan Street Band... you'd think this was straight from the 1970s, but nope, 2008. This is the title track of the album "Make the Road by Walking". Recommended, it's alllllll good.

Spanky Wilson

Didn't really need to think of a title for this post cos the lady has the best name in the music industry like ever...
Yet that can't overshadow the funked up awesomeness of this classic from her and the Quantic Soul Orchestra.

Don't Joke With a Hungry Man

Spanky Wilson's been laying down jazzy vocals since the 60s and as her work with Quantic demonstrates, she's totally still got it. If I recall correctly this track was first recorded for Quantic's "Mishaps Happening" album, but it also features on "I'm Thankful" where they collaborated with Spanky for a whole album. Both of which are well worth looking in to.

Monday, 28 May 2012

Almost lost in time

I knew absolutely bugger all about Little Ann until the other day. I stumbled across this classy track and decided to find out a bit more... Turns out she recorded an album in the 60s, but it was never released and the tape reels were just left on a shelf somewhere. Then in the 90s the tapes were discovered by accident, people were like OMFG and BOOM! Onto the Northern Soul scene she goes.

Possession

I believe this is probably her most well known tune.
What Should I Do?

Sunday, 27 May 2012

Sunday lovely

I'm in love with Featurecast, the man can do no wrong. Will be linking a load of his tracks and mixes, but we'll kick it off with the one that's shagging my soul right now.

Get lovely

Nirvana cover = sex music

Stay Away
Covering a Nirvana track is always going to court controversy and to be honest most I've heard failed to do anything worthwhile. This tune however has such a filthy, dirty, beat to it that even before you factor in Charles Bradley's mindfuckingly sexual vocals, this tune is already licking your eardrums and dry humping your leg.

Filthier than a crack whore's knickers this.
